About CME MARKS Dental Unit

Continuing Medical Education (CME) also known as Continuing Professional Development (CPD), extends throughout the professional career. CPD is the process by which health professionals keep their knowledge and skills updated to meet the needs of patients, the health service, and their own professional development. CME is imperative for every professional and a prerequisite for enhancing the quality of healthcare. CME consists of educational activities to maintain, develop and/or increase the knowledge, skills, and professional performance of medical and health professionals.

The Continuing Medical Education (CME) committee of MARKS Medical College Hospital, Dental Unit has begun their journey since 2022. This committee has been formally designated to upgrade and maintain professional competence.

Mission Statement 

To foster a culture of lifelong learning and professional development among all dental faculty and practitioners, ensuring the highest standards of oral health education, practice, and patient care in line with national and international standards.

The mission of the MARSK Dental CDE Committee is to develop, implement, and accredit high-quality, evidence-based educational programs that address the current professional practice gaps of dental professionals. The Committee ensures all activities support lifelong learning, adhere to regulatory standards of the BM&DC, and ultimately enhance clinical competence and patient outcomes.

FUNCTIONS OF CME COMMITTEE

The main goals of CME programme are:

  1. To offer CME activities based on identified learners’ needs and deficiencies;
  2. To design and meet CME activities to meet the stated learning objectives;
  3. To present CME activities that enhances inter- disciplinary synergy of health professionals;
  4. To provide CME experience in knowledge, attitude, and behavioral skills that results in improved clinical performance and professional development

OBJECTIVE OF cme cOMMITTEE

  • To design and implement a comprehensive, evidence-based CME program for the dental unit.
  • To ensure all CME activities meet or exceed the standards and criteria set by relevant accreditation bodies, such as the BM&DC.
  • To enhance the knowledge, skills, and professional attitudes of faculty and dental professionals.
  • To monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of CME programs to ensure continuous quality improvement.
  • To facilitate collaboration between the dental unit, medical college, and other external professional bodies for joint educational initiatives.

Composition of CME Committee

 

The committee shall be a standing body, accountable to the Principal of the MARKS Medical College, Dental Unit. It should be composed of 5 to 10 members representing dental specialties and 1–2 administrative staff.

  • Chairperson:
  • The Chairperson holds ultimate responsibility for the leadership, integrity, and strategic alignment of the institution’s entire CME/CDE program with institutional goals and accreditation standards.
  • A senior faculty member (Professor/Associate Professor level) with experience in dental education, should be appointed by the Principal/Governing Body. For MARKS CME committee Dental Unit Chief will be act as Chairperson .
  • Convener :
  • The Convener is typically the primary administrative and strategic lead who ensures that the committee fulfills its Terms of Reference (ToR) and adheres to accreditation standards.
  • Meeting Management: Call meetings, set agendas in consultation with the Secretary, and chair all committee proceedings effectively and impartially.
  • Decision Making: Facilitate consensus among members and cast a deciding vote when necessary (if defined in the ToR).
  • Activity Approval: Oversee the rigorous review process for all CME/CDE activity applications to ensure educational integrity, objective content, and proper mitigation of commercial bias.
  • Compliance Assurance: Act as the final authority within the committee on interpreting accreditation standards (e.g., ACCME or BM&DC criteria).
  • Record Keeping: Ensure that robust systems for documentation, record-keeping, and activity evaluation are maintained by the administrative support (Secretary).
  • Annual Reporting: Compile and present a comprehensive annual report of the CME program’s effectiveness, participation data, and compliance status to institutional leadership.
  • Member Secretary: A faculty member responsible for administration and documentation, often the Education Coordinator for the Dental Unit.

  • One representative from Clinical Department.
  • One representative from Basic subject Department
  • Three member-at-large from the general faculty. If required , One representative from each dental department ( both basic and clinical)
